How Are Our Felt Balls Made?
Every felt ball from Felt & Yarn begins as raw wool fiber and ends as a perfectly round, densely felted sphere — shaped entirely by hand, without machines.
The Wool We Use
Our felt balls are made from 100% natural wool sourced from organic wool farms in New Zealand. New Zealand merino and crossbred wool is considered among the finest felting wool in the world — it has the right fiber diameter, crimp structure, and scale pattern to lock tightly together during the felting process, producing a firm, durable ball that holds its shape over years of use. No synthetic fibers. No blends. Just pure wool.
The Wet Felting Process
Our Nepalese artisans use the traditional wet felting method — a technique that has been practiced in Nepal for generations. Here is how each felt ball is made:
- Fiber preparation: Raw wool is weighed, separated, and loosely shaped into a rough ball by hand.
- Wet felting: The wool is submerged in warm soapy water. The artisan then rolls the wet fiber continuously between their palms, applying even pressure. The warm water opens the wool's scales, and the friction causes the fibers to interlock and compress — this is the felting action.
- Shaping: As the ball firms up, the artisan adjusts pressure to ensure a perfectly round shape. This stage requires skill and experience — no two balls are identical, which is part of their handmade character.
- Rinsing & drying: The ball is thoroughly rinsed to remove all soap, then sun-dried to retain its natural texture and color brightness.
- Dyeing: Balls are dyed using azo-free, non-toxic dyes that are safe for children and the environment. Colors are set at high temperature to ensure they are colorfast and wash-safe.

Felt Ball Size Guide — Which Size Is Right for Your Project?
Not sure which size to order? Use this guide to match the right felt ball diameter to your project:
1cm Felt Balls — Jewelry & Fine Craft The smallest in our range. Ideal for earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and hair accessories. Also used as filler in mixed garlands and for fine embellishment on textile art. Their compact size makes them easy to thread and glue.
1.5cm Felt Balls — Garlands & Small Décor Accents A versatile mid-small size popular for hanging garlands, curtain tiebacks, and decorative borders. Works well for children's room décor and party bunting where you want colour without bulk.
2cm Felt Balls — The Most Popular All-Round Size Our best-selling size, and for good reason. The 2cm felt ball strikes the ideal balance between visibility and ease of use. Use them for garlands, wreaths, mobile hangers, felt ball rugs (as a starting point), table runners, and mixed craft projects. Also the go-to size for wholesale buyers stocking craft supply stores.
2.5cm Felt Balls — Rugs, Wreaths & Statement Décor A noticeable step up in size, making individual balls more prominent. Excellent for felt ball rugs where you want texture and colour to stand out clearly. Also widely used for bohemian wall hangings, wreath-making, and coaster projects.
3cm Felt Balls — Rugs, Poufs & Bold Décor At 3cm, these balls create significant visual impact. Most commonly used in felt ball rug construction, as well as stool and pouf covers, large garlands, and chunky textile wall art. A favourite with interior designers and home décor makers.
4cm Felt Balls — Large-Scale Projects & Dryer Ball Alternatives Our largest solid felt ball. Used for oversized garlands, large rug projects, decorative bowl fillers, and as standalone ornaments. The 4cm size is also popular as a natural wool dryer ball substitute in smaller loads.
If you are unsure which size suits your project, contact us with a description of your intended use and we will recommend the best option.

Patterned & Designer Felt Balls — Swirl, Polka Dot, Glitter & Tie Dye
Looking for something beyond solid? Our designer felt balls include swirl felt balls, polka dot felt balls, glitter felt balls, and tie dye felt balls — all hand-felted from natural wool and available for wholesale and bulk orders.
100 Colors of Wool Felt Balls — From Pastels to Deep Jewel Tones
Choosing a color is half the fun. Our felt balls are available in 100 hand-dyed shades, giving you one of the widest color ranges available from any felt ball supplier. Every shade is dyed using azo-free, non-toxic dyes and is colorfast through normal handling and display.
Our color range spans four main families:
Pastels: Soft, muted tones including Baby Blue, Peach, Mint Green, Lavender, Blush Pink, and Cream. These are consistently popular for nursery décor, baby shower crafts, spring garlands, and wedding accessories.
Earth Tones & Naturals: Warm, grounded shades like Terracotta, Taupe, Khaki, Rust, Almond, Timber Wolf, and Natural Grey. These suit bohemian interiors, Montessori-style toys, and organic home décor. Our natural undyed wool shades — White, Natural Grey, and Marbled tones — are especially sought after by minimalist designers.
Brights & Primary Colors: High-saturation shades including Red, Royal Blue, Emerald Green, Orange, Yellow, and Bright Coral. These work for children's craft projects, classroom supplies, festival decorations, and anything that needs to pop with color.
Deep & Jewel Tones: Rich, saturated shades like Navy Blue, Maroon, Midnight Blue, Claret, Dark Green, and Graphite. These are popular for sophisticated home décor, Christmas wreaths, and premium garland projects.
Rainbow & Assorted Sets: Can't choose? We offer pre-mixed rainbow assortments and custom assorted packs across any size. Perfect for craft retailers who want to offer variety, or for projects like felt ball rugs and garlands that call for a wide color spread.
Custom Color Matching for Wholesale: If you have a specific brand color, interior palette, or Pantone reference, we offer custom color matching on wholesale orders. Contact us with your color reference and required quantities for a quote.
